If you’re wondering why, here’s the answer: on April 16, 2015 there will be new federal regulations regarding mandates for higher energy standards on residential water heaters. The new Department of Energy (DOE) 2015 mandates will require higher energy efficiency ratings on virtually all residential water heaters. These changes will have an impact on how water heaters are designed, manufactured, tested, distributed and installed, which means it’s affecting everyone from manufacturers to installers. Who will most likely be the most affected? The homeowner.
Simply put, these new federally mandated water heaters are going to be taller, wider and more expensive.
So what does this mean for you? Essentially, if your home has a water heater that holds less than 55 gallons, the new water heaters may be an inch or two larger and can likely be placed where the old one was. But if you’re replacing a larger water heater, like ones found in most residential homes, you’ll have to do some research, as new units may need more space. As for the expenses, these new energy efficient water heaters are designed to save you money in the long run, however it may cause you to spend more money up front when purchasing a new one. Before purchasing a new water heater, you’ll want to contact a professional who will be able to tell you exactly what kind of water heater will work best for your home and the preparation that will be needed for installation and optimal performance.
It’s important to know that the new standards will not require home owners to immediately replace their current water heaters. However, when the time comes for you to purchase a new one, it will need to be one that meets the new DOE efficiency standards. Water heaters typically lasts around seven years; if you are on the tail end of that, even if your unit in good working order, it might be the right time to purchase a new water heater now. Something else to keep in mind is that once the April 16 deadline passes, current water heaters that do not meet the DOE efficiency standards will no longer be produced. They will still be able to be serviced and repaired, but will no longer be on the market.
