Cold winter weather always brings the risk of frozen pipes. Frozen pipes can burst, causing significant damage to your home. That’s why it’s important to take steps to prevent your pipes from freezing in the first place.
Nebrasky has some helpful tips to keep your pipes safe this winter:
- Insulate your pipes. Pipe insulation is relatively inexpensive and can be found at most hardware stores. Be sure to insulate all exposed pipes, including those in your attic, basement, and crawl spaces.
- Seal up any cracks or holes. Check your home’s foundation, walls, and windows for any cracks or holes that could allow cold air to reach your pipes. Seal these openings with caulk or weatherstripping.
- Let your faucets drip. Letting your faucets drip during extremely cold weather can help prevent your pipes from freezing. The running water will generate more energy than standing water, which can be just enough to keep the pipes from freezing.
- Maintain a consistent temperature in your home. Even if you’re going out of town, keep your thermostat set to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This will help prevent your pipes from freezing while you’re away.
Additional Tips
- If a sudden cold front creeps up on you, duct tape and newspaper wrapped around exposed pipes can work in a pinch.
- Disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses.
- Open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes under sinks.
What to Do If Your Pipes Freeze
If your pipes do freeze, don’t panic! Here are a few things you can do:
- Turn on the faucet. This will help relieve pressure in the pipes and may help thaw the ice.
- Apply heat to the frozen pipe. You can use a hairdryer, a heating pad, or a space heater to thaw the ice. Be careful not to use an open flame, as this could damage your pipes.
- Call Nebrasky. If you can’t thaw the ice yourself, or if you have a burst pipe, call a Nebrasky immediately!
